We do recommend that you always consult with a travel insurance provider for specific plan coverage, benefits, and procedures.

Why do you require a travel protection plan?

We require a travel protection plan as a part of our Safety and Security plan to ensure that all travelers are covered and protected for any unforeseen events and emergencies on the journey.

We lead journeys with students — possibly your child — and we want to know that we can take care of all travelers properly, no matter what happens.

Think about it: Would you travel with 20-plus students — other people’s children — and not want them, and you, to be protected in every way possible?

US medical insurance is rarely accepted abroad, and many unforeseen events that can occur when traveling require coverage that such medical insurance would not cover even if it were accepted.

In addition to medical issues, other unforeseen events can occur: You need to cancel your journey for some reason prior to departure; your flights are delayed and you need overnight lodging and food; an emergency happens at home that requires you or your child to cut the journey short and return home; or an unexpected event occurs in the destination that requires adjustments in the journey. These are just a few possibilities. A travel protection plan provides coverage for the unexpected on your journey.

No tour fee covers the expenses for unforeseen or emergency situations, which is why a travel protection plan is essential.

What specifically is required?

All travelers must have a valid travel protection plan with the following minimum coverages:
• Trip Delay: $150 per day / 2 day minimum coverage
• Trip Interruption: 100% of trip cost minimum
• Medical Expenses: $15,000 minimum
• Emergency Evacuation: $100,000 minimum

Our minimum requirements are merely what we believe are reasonable minimum of coverage and benefit amounts that you should have on our journeys and are neither indicative of what we know or believe could happen on your journey nor what anything could cost. In no way do our minimum requirements suggest or advise that you should not consider additional coverage or higher benefit amounts.

Is it certain that my medical insurance is not valid in Mexico?

In our extensive travel experience, we have found that very few, if any, US health care insurance plans are accepted abroad. In fact, even if your health insurance is accepted in Mexico, it may not be easy to use, and in most cases, you will have to pay for care upfront (secondary coverage) and wait to be reimbursed at whatever amount your health insurance plan chooses to cover the services. This reimbursement can often be less than what was actually charged and paid in the foreign medical clinic or hospital. Also, care facilities abroad sometimes charge non-citizens more for the same services, and US health plans are unlikely to cover such costs. Your plan also might limit your choice of clinics or facilities to only a few in the entire country.

We believe that a travel protection plan stating that it is PRIMARY for medical coverage is the best option.

Keep in mind that your US medical insurance will not cover you for cancellation of your journey or any other unforeseen travel events such as trip delay or trip interruption.

Will credit card travel protection meet the requirements?

If you purchase a journey with a credit card that offers travel protection benefits, those benefits may or may not meet our requirements.

We suggest that you speak directly with the credit card company about the items covered and the coverage benefits in order to confirm that they meet our requirements. You may wish to ask these specific questions and ensure that coverage and benefit amount meet our minimum requirements:

• Is trip cancellation coverage included?
• Is trip interruption coverage included?
• Is trip delay coverage included
• Is medical/dental and evacuation coverage included?
• Are pre-existing medical conditions covered?
• Is lost baggage coverage included?
• Is delayed baggage coverage included?

You may find that the cost of a separate travel protection plan is well worth the small investment for an international journey.

If your credit card’s included travel protection meets our requirements for Travel Delay and Travel Interruption coverage, you might consider purchasing a travel protection plan for just Medical Coverage. Many travel protection providers allow you to declare a $0 (zero dollar) amount for the trip value and purchase only medical and emergency evacuation coverage. We suggest that you speak directly with the provider in these cases to ensure that the coverage and benefit amounts meet our minimum requirements.

What is Primary versus Secondary coverage?

PRIMARY coverage for travel protection allows you to file claims directly with the travel protection plan provider. This eliminates any need to involve your health insurance company or other provider(s) of travel protection or travel insurance.

SECONDARY travel protection coverage, on the other hand, requires that you first file the claim with your existing insurance before filing with the travel protection plan provider. Existing insurance could include your US health insurance, a credit card used to purchase the journey that comes with travel protection, or any other insurance coverages you may have.

A major benefit of PRIMARY coverage is that in the case of a medical emergency, your travel protection plan provider can often negotiate payment guarantees upfront to the hospital or medical provider, thus eliminating your need to pay large sums of money at the time of care. We suggest that you consult with your preferred travel protection plan provider about this type of scenario.

When you research travel protection plans, and before you purchase a plan, we suggest that you ask whether the travel protection plan you are considering is Primary or Secondary coverage. PRIMARY coverage is always the preferable option for the ease of filing claims and the payment of covered benefits.

Are events likely to happen that will require travel protection?

No. But as the wise saying goes: It’s better to be safe than sorry!

We believe that it’s always best to be prepared. All travel has its risks, and we want to know that all of our travelers are covered for any unforeseen events.

It comes down to peace of mind: For just a small additional charge, you get the comfort of knowing you are covered in case of an emergency.

Why must I provide proof of my travel protection plan?

We require you to share the specific details of your travel protection plan — including the policy itself — so that we know that every traveler has a plan that meets our requirements and that it is certain the plan and its details and benefits are approved and accepted.

Why must I agree to possibly transfer funds in an emergency?

Should you have an unforeseen event or emergency, we may have to pay upfront for services that, while such costs may be reimbursed to you by your plan, necessitate that those funds be transferred to us to cover our payment on your behalf.

In many cases, your travel protection company will guarantee payment to doctors, hospitals, and other emergency services.

Generally speaking, we would require that you transfer funds to us should your travel protection company be unable to guarantee payment of larger sums or for any other payment that we may have to pay on your behalf at the time. (This is another reason that PRIMARY travel protection is a better option than secondary coverage.)

We will indicate to you at the time whether or not such expenses need to be paid immediately by bank transfer or can be paid by invoice with less immediate urgency.

Why don't you include travel protection in the journey fee?

We don’t include travel protection in the journey fee because we are not permitted to do by insurance regulations that protect your right to select the travel protection plan of your choice.

We are permitted, however, to both require that you have travel protection and to specify certain minimum coverage. You are free to select the plan you choose from your preferred provider.

Our minimum requirements are what we deem a reasonable minimum of coverage and benefit amounts that you should have on our journey. Our minimum requirement is not indicative of any belief or knowledge of what could occur on your journey nor of what costs may be incurred. In no way do our minimum requirements suggest or advise that you should not consider additional coverage or higher benefit amounts.
