Day 1

¡Bienvenidos a Oaxaca!

The moment you step off the plane in the Oaxaca-Xocotolán airport, you’ll know you’ve arrived somewhere special on your Academic journey.

  • You’ll have time — after an exciting day of travel — to get settled in your room at the Holiday Inn Express Oaxaca Centro Histórico.
  • You’ll have a light dinner and get a chance to socialize with your fellow travelers.
  • You’ll get your Academic Snack Box to enjoy in your room for the duration of the journey.

Day 2

Discovering Oaxaca

This morning, after a delicious Oaxacan breakfast, you’ll enjoy morning and afternoon Academic Explorations of the centro histórico of Oaxaca that include the following:

  • Impressive Spanish Colonial cathedrals and churches.
  • Bustling food markets.
  • The Zócalo, the lively central plaza of Oaxaca.
  • Sunday crafts and artist markets.
  • Spanish Colonial architectural gems of the city.
  • A visit to a local artist’s gallery to meet the artist and see his work.
  • A special dinner in a quintessential Oaxacan restaurant to cap off our first day.
  • The charm of an evening stroll in the centro histórico.

Day 3

Pyramids, Monasteries & Pottery

After breakfast, we begin an exciting day immersed in the pre-Colombian and Spanish Colonial history of the Oaxaca region and the culinary and artistic heritage of its people. This Academic Exploration includes the following:

  • Pyramids of Monte Albán — the fascinating ruins of an ancient center of Zapotec and Mixtec culture.
  • Exmonastery of Santiago Apóstol — circa 1550, this beautiful edifice features important Spanish Colonial-era frescoes.
  • Lunch in a traditional outdoor restaurant — try the world-famous mole sauce!
  • Hands-on pottery-making — create your own pieces of Oaxaca’s famous barro negro — black pottery — to take home.

Day 4

Mitla, Hierve el Agua & el Tule

Today you’ll enjoy a fascinating Academic Exploration to these locations:

  • Hierve el Agua — an otherworldly landscape of petrified waterfalls and spring-fed pools. 
  • Mitla — the ancient Zapotec religious center, unique in Mexico for its elaborate, intricate mosaics and geometric designs that cover tombs, panels, and friezes.  
  • Tule site of the over 1,500-year-old Montezuma cypress, sacred to the Zapotec, famous as the world’s stoutest tree.

Day 5

Cooking, Savoring & Giving Back

Your Academic Exploration today is about all cooking and making a difference.  

We’ll spend our day in the local village of La Ciénega de Zimatlán where you’ll enjoy the following:

  • Learning from local cooks how to make delicious tamales wrapped in banana leaves.
  • Mastering the art of making the perfect tortilla!
  • Painting a colorful mural on the town’s main street to leave a lasting contribution.

Day 6

Markets, Frida Kahlo, Murals, Painting & Pizza

We start today’s Academic Exploration with visits to local villages for a variety of experiences we guarantee you’ll never forget:

  • The bustling market of Ocotlán de Morelos — see and sample delicious treats unique to Oaxaca! 
  • The murals of Rodolfo Morales in Octotlán — the famous Zapotec muralist.
  • Lunch with “Frida Kahlo” — at La Cocina de Frida in the Ocotlán market.
  • San Martin Tilcajete, a village famous for alebrijes, the colorful Oaxacan folk art sculptures of fantastical creatures — you can paint one of your own!

We’ll wrap up the day with a fun pizza and dance party — on the delightful rooftop terrace of a local pizzeria!

Day 7

Cultures, Chocolate & A Show!

Your Academic Exploration today circles back to Oaxaca for a variety of events:
